An abstract syntax describes the generic structure independently of data types of the coding technology, which is used, in order to represent these data types. It is an element of the presentation layer (layer 6) of the OSI model. A well-known and a much used abstract syntax are ASN.1, which is standardized in ISO standard 8824 and is particularly used in the data communication, with SNMP. While the formal description of the data structures is called abstract syntax, the transfer syntax designates the coding rules. With ASN.1 that is the basic Encoding Rules, which is contained in ISO 8825. On a computer another coding is used usually again, which one usually calls restaurants syntax.
