Generally

At the beginning of of 1991 planned to extend Nintendo the SNES by a revolutionary novelty, it should an extension in form of a CD-ROM drive assembly on the market be brought. In addition one died a co-operation with Philips, which should supply the CD drive assemblies. This bottom plate would have thereby a quasi-standard had set and Philips the straight CD-I-format had developed there, it would have been very probable that this format would have become generally accepted also for other applications. Nintendo gave Philips even the right to use some characters from NINT DO plays in own products so that some simple plays with Mario and Zelda rauskamen. In this co-operation Nintendo had however complete control of all plays, which are brought for this out.

When Nintendo wanted to present the equipment however in the same year on the C.E.S., Sony made itself attentively, with those Nintendo still another contract of 1988 had. Therefore the Deal with Philips and Nintendo burst changed the side to Sony and together presented it equipment, which they called Playstation. This does not concern the PlayStation by Sony! This equipment played special "“super Discs"” with 680 MT capacity and normal SNES plays. When Nintendo noticed however, which Sony control of the publication of plays had, they closed a contract with Philips again. They could not however from the contract with Sony, since they were supplied by these with the sound chip of the SNES.

Nintendo wanted to keep control of the software under all circumstances. Sony however wanted to hold it in the contract and threatened it to sue. Nintendo calmed it down and Sony was waiting to only experience in order on the next C.E.S. von Nintendo that they would have an exclusive co-operation with Philips. In order not to weaken the Japanese economy, Sony did without a process. Nintendo however created it to out-wind oneself from the critical parts of the contract with Sony and resumed its work with Philips.

For a long time also this co-operation did not hold and Nintendo changed again the sides. After several months this and Hers buried Nintendo the project, although it had apparent far prospered already very. A special reason was the publication of a further chip for their play modules, which the data for the mainframe prepared and better effects possible makes. The CD extension had to be improved, in order to still overtrump this new chip. Which however finally the decisive reason for the task of the project was, of Nintendo will probably remain secret.

Generally

The Satellaview (BS-X) is an ADD on, in order to receive plays, demos and information about a satellite. It appeared exclusively on 23 April 1995 in Japan and used the satellite transmitter pc. GIGA. Hauptproblem was that the information was radiated as with a television program only at certain clock times. One had to start the equipment to a certain time and to download then the data on a special Flash module, which was again recordable. This module, the "“BS-X Special Broadcast cartridge"”, was inserted over super Game of Boy similar adapters into the cartridge Slot of the SNES and could store 8 MBit at data. On the satellite channel contents from 13:00 to 19:00 clock were sent, otherwise a normal television program ran.

In the Satellaview was a large recess, into which an appearing later modem should be built. It was never published, with which also no Multiplayer plays became possible. Rumor way is to have appeared it nevertheless, for this gave it so far however no proof.

With the start of the program still Nintendo, Konami, Squaresoft, Taito and Data East had committed themselves to provide contents (usually advertisement) for the project only Nintendo and Squaresoft adhered however to their announcement.

The offer was divided, like the starting screen, in 4 main groups.

    Specifications

The Satellaview had an additional 512-KBit-RAM, in order to be able to represent the graphic operating system. This RAM was however never used for another purpose. Additionally still another 1-MBit-ROM for the operating system was inserted and a 2-Mbit-Flash-Speicher for transferred programs. This memory was however much too small limited, since nearly no program had this small size and one had to therefore buy the 8-Mbit-Flash-Karten.
