Adaptive Routing is a term, which is common in the network technology. It describes the ability of a network a route e.g. around a damaged or overloaded or missing network element to find.

The opposite of adaptive Routing is static Routing. In systems with static Routing the connections are stopped firmly. A loss or an overloading liaison vehicles cannot be compensated in these systems no more.

Adaptive Routing in LANs mainly on the level rout and implemented Bridges. Often also in order to distribute the net load evenly to thus include also not fully utilized Nebenstrecken into the data communication with.

The following network minutes support adaptive Routing:

  • RIP (Routing Information Protocol)
  • OSPF (open Shortest Path roofridge)
  • IS-IS (Intermediate system ton of Intermediate system Protocol)
  • IGRP/EIGRP (Interior gateway Routing Protocol)/(Enhanced Interior gateway Routing Protocol)

With usually the so-called Spanning Tree procedure (see also Spanning Tree Protocol) has all this minutes a great importance.
