APPC (English Advanced Program ton of Program Communications) is minutes, over which computer programs over a network can communicate.
APPC was developed as a component of of IBM Systems Network Architecture (SNA). Thereby several APIs which could be served to a large extent also problem-free by programming languages such as COBOL or REXX, developed.
APPC is linked with the term LU 6,2 (Logical unit type 6.2)
APPC is to a large extent limited to the IBM computer world: Mainframe operating systems, AS/400, OS/2, AIX; for Windows it gives a SNA Serverprodukt of Microsoft. Supported within the IBM system world APPC of each system software, e.g. on the Mainframe CICS, DB2, CIM and also the MVS.
Contrary to TCP/IP, with which both communication partners always possess a clear role (one is always server, which others always Client), are equal with APPC the communication partners, i.e. everyone can be both servers and Client equally. The role like also the number of the parallel sessions between the partners is negotiated over so-called CNOS sessions (CHANGE NUMBER OF session) with a special log mode (e.g. with IBM snasvcmg). Communication of the data is made then by so-called data sessions, whose details log modes of the VTAM administrator (e.g. Length of the data blocks, coding etc.) to be determined know.
With the triumphant advance from TCP/IP is APPC on the retreat.
