Aggregation means in connection with Routingprotokollen (for example BGP, OSPF or IS-IS) that several routes (partial English Prefixes called) can be combined into a route, without the contained destination address is contentwise changed thereby. Sense of this measure is to minimize the number of routes which can be administered and to increase thus the efficiency of the Routingprotokolls.

This technology requires the availability of Classless inter+ Domain Routing.

Likewise aggregation can be used also for steering the Routings as a part of an aggregated route by a more exact route (English more specific) is publicised. The more exact route wins here for the more specific goal, while the remaining range of the aggregated route follows.
