When designated air Gap (English for "„air gap "“) in computer science a process, which separates two IT-systems physically and logically, but nevertheless the transmission of utilizable data permits.

An air Gap is used, in order to isolate two or more differently trustworthy computers or computer networks from each other, which must in each case process however data different system. The targeted application is similar to that a Firewall.

Realization

An air Gap is often realized as process, with which data will transfer by transport of a magnetic medium. A transportable medium is inserted into the source system, described there, removed from this and inserted into the target system, where contents are read and processed. The use lies in the isolation of the systems from each other:

  • the possibility for the data communication in only one direction can be guaranteed
  • the target system cannot be addressiert by/the source systems
  • even during transmission of mark commodity o. (if the target system e.g. does not have a connection to an appropriate computer network like Internet) no backward channel is available, for which for example the transmission of confidential contents could make possible

Apart from the realization as process technical implementations of the air of Gap concept exist:

  • the LOCK Keeper of the Trierer of institute for telematics
  • the e-Gap-products of Whale Communications
  • the Reflective of Gap products by Spearhead Technologies Inc.
  • the DATA of diode products by Owl Computing Technologies Inc.
