Apple III was the first computer of Apple computer, which was developed without Steve Wozniak (it sketched Apple the II to 1976).
The work on Apple the III began in the year 1978, was introduced it in May 1980. In practice incomplete compatibility to the popular Apple II and its already quite large software library, and above all technical problems, as for instance frequent of crashes by overheating, and the tendency of the chips to slip from their (approve of) bases made Apple the III the flop.
The technical problems were repaired in changed series, but the developed bad reputation of the equipment could not be changed thereby any longer. The market gap above Apple the II, developed in such a way, filled 1981 the IBM-PC.
Since Apple II differently than the III further well sold itself, Apple called its next 8-bit computer 1982 then not Apple IV, but Apple IIe, and paid attention this time to full compatibility to Apple II.
