The Jaguar is a video game console of the company Atari which is based on the processor Motorola 68000.

1993 the published equipment with 13.295 MHz and were equipped with 64-Bit diagram and 32-Bit sound chip are clocked. The two special chips with the names Tom and Jerry have an RISC architecture. The Design of both processors proved however as unsatisfactorily validated, countless errors forced a "“avoiding"” the software developer on the stable however MC68000 no longer with market entrance up-to-date. The 68000er works internally with 32 and externally with 16 bits (data bus). The console has four 512KByte DRAM chips, which result in together 2MB main storage. The diagram chip supports hardware scrolling, Gouraud Shading and scaling (Texture Mapping, Morphing against it not). For the equipment about 50 plug-in modules with plays appeared, before which attitude of all jaguar products by Atari still some few CD-ROM became published. Some enthusiastische manufacturers (scatoLOGIC, Songbird Productions, Starcat development, etc.) produced however still thereafter new titles and are partially this very day active. Likewise also a very enthusiastische and strong fan municipality held the loyalty for the system, and waits still longingly for new plays. Special hope carriers are classical author Remakes, how Gorf Pluz, WAD Bodies, Clicks! or diagram the Adventurespiel Eerievale.Die of modules can contain up to 6MB software and the Spielstand partly on EEPROM store. This last project carried out by Atari was not despite for the time at that time of advanced technology a commercial success - the estimated sales figures were between 125.000 and 250.000 units, those of the jaguar CD drive assembly about 10.000. The console was developed considerably of the Flare2-Chipdesignern Martin Brennan and John Mathieson. The manufacturing took place in co-operation with IBM.

Since newest a new medium for future Jaguar is plays in development beside modules and CD. Here it concerns a Compact Flash adapter module, which is to make it possible to publish Jaguar plays on Compact Flash. This alternative would be more favorable and at the same time short load times and large storage capacities would make possible.

Planned successor: Atari Jaguar 2

This console was intended for 1996 to release - probably due to the activities with JTS and few the money, which still had Atari, one did not finish.
