With a dual Homed host concerns it a host, which is resident in two network environments. This means usually that he has IP addresses from at least two networks.

The DHH is from both networks attainable, had however no direct network connection between the nets and does not pass on in particular packages from the network, which are intended for the other network, not.

The DHH procedure has several targeted applications:

  • A server can to dual-homed be configured, in order to be able to answer access from two different networks differently, e.g. if inquiries from the local network are to be treated differently than inquiries from the Internet. This can happen also from other intentions, approximately for reasons of the performance.
  • In place of a Firewall, which have the purpose, only defined packages of the one into the other network to routes, the Routing can remain also completely deactivated. Users in a network, who would like to send packages into another network, must announce themselves then, e.g. by telnet or Secure Shell, on the DHH and start the program, which is to receive the access to the other network, from this computer.
  • Rout are by definition dual-homed, exactly like most Firewall configurations.
  • Sometimes also the term of the Application Firewall, which actually designates a Proxy, implies the presence of a dual Homed host.

The term is not a component of a RFCs or an Internet standard and becomes almost exclusively from experts (see guru (hacker)) used.
