It acts primarily as if rout for all it well-known minutes of the layer 3 of the OSI reference model. The minutes information is inferred from the Schicht-3-Header of the packet. Stands there if a minutes number, which supports the brouter, the package is continued to obtain on layer 3 by Routing.

If unknown or with not routbaren minutes no minutes number is present, acts the brouter as Bridge. A brouter, which can pass on only minutes IP, would ignore thus the Schicht-3-Protokoll IPX and would transfer these packages over its Bridge. Likewise all not routbaren minutes were e.g. led like NetBIOS over the Bridge.
