In March 1991 the company Commodore placed its new development CDTV (Commodore dynamic totally vision) on the winters CES read out Vegas publicly. The competition product to the CD-i von Philips united the technology of a home computer on basis of the Amiga 500 with the concept of a Settopbox. The equipment looked like a CD-Player (internal project name also Black baby) and had a remote maintenance, which exhibits a strong similarity with the today's Gamepads (see PlayStation). The moreover the equipment with an inserted CD-ROM drive assembly came, with which one could play also audio CDs (video CDs knew only the CD ", and also only with auxiliary hardware) as well as CD+G CDs (CD plus diagram).

The problem of the console was on the one hand the software lacking, on the other hand for this concept to small arithmetic performance, which had as a consequence that the rendition of videos was hardly possible.

  • CCU: Motorola 68000, 7.14 MHz (NTSC version) and/or 7.09 MHz (PAL version).
  • Memory: 1 MT chip MEMORY.
  • Chip set: Enhanced chip set. (ECS)
  • OS: Kickstart 1,3 + CDTV module.
  • Drive assembly: Single speed CD Rome

Software

For the CDTV a quantity appeared plays on CD-ROM. In addition, there was applications of learning and Multimedia software.

Compatibility

Since the hardware was based to a large extent on the Amiga 500, one could use most software further on the CDTV. To which however then the connection of an external floppy disk drive was necessary.

The CDTV could be versatile extended:

  • Gene LOCK interface mix (TV-picture and CDTV picture)
  • Keyboard

  • directly connectable Joysticks
  • PCMCIA-1-Kartenslot
  • SCSI CONTROLLER for non removable disk
