The Colecovision was a play console of Coleco, which appeared in August 1982. Diagram and Gamepad corresponded for instance to the standard of Arcade at that time Games; during introduction on the market 12 software titles stood to the selection, which were sold in the form of play cartridges (modules, not Bandkasetten). In the course of the years the pallet grew up on approximately 170 titles, among them mainly conversions of automat plays.

Colecovision for the European market were manufactured by CBS; these contained a graphics chip suitable for the European PAL TV system.

Coleco offered an ADD on module, which made a playing possible of Atari 2600-Titeln and for which Colecovision made the console with the largest play selection of its time. Market leader Atari did not succeed it to stop the sales of the module. A further module, published in the summer 1983, made the console called an adequate computer, for Coleco Adam.

Christmas 1982 had sold 500,000 units to Coleco. Success was to be due to the enclosed plays. While Atari with the popularity of space Invaders had created the break-through, then the Colecovision was the first home console, on which the cult play was playable Donkey Kong of Nintendo.

The sales one million exceeded at the beginning of of 1983, until 1983 the large video game Crash came. The production of the Colecovision was stopped in spring 1984. Despite the difficulties toward end of its bloom time more than six million units were sold.

Today Coleco emulators and plays are common in the Internet. Although these plays are subject still to the copyright, the owners do not intend usually to make their requirements valid contrary to the right owners of Intellivision and Atari plays.
