Columbia is the name of a supercomputer, which was taken in the year 2004 by the American space agency NASA in enterprise. It is used particularly for Simulationen, in order to compute for example the behavior of rockets or the space shuttle during the flight.

The SGI Altix computer is in the Ames Research center in Mountain View, California and was at the time of its start-up the fastest computer of the world. According to NASA it consists 512, thus 10,240 Itanium 2 processors with an output of 51,87 TFLOPS of 20 x. In June 2005 it is thereby according to Top 500 the second fastest computer of the world.

It received its name Columbia and honour on 1 February 2003 space shuttles Columbia had an accident.
