An individual computer in a net can be identified and communicated by the name with it. The names must be thereby clearly with a computer connected, only so can be guaranteed that a computer is found reliable. An inadvertent duplicate of computer names can be led to unforeseeable behavior during net communication and be used even by hackers abusively, in order to lure a communication partner into a trap. Such attacks are called in the Internet also DNS Spoofing.

Within a so-called Domain then again the computer names must be clear. The Fully Qualified Domain Name consists of the computer name and the Domainnamen and cannot be used thus not several times.

Particularly with Windowssystemen the computer name has also the task to identify a computer clearly over NetBIOS minutes.
