DRBD stands for Distributed Replicated block DEVICE. It serves for it to reflect block equipment on a productive (primary) server in real time on another (secondary) server. This procedure is used, in order to realize high availability in the UNIX/Linux surrounding field and to thus achieve a good availability of different services.
All write accesses are conveyed over the network to the second server. Only if the second server acknowledged the successful recording procedure to the first server, this announces to the application the end recording procedure (this technology is comparable with a RAID 1 over TCP/IP). If the first server precipitates, this is announced as inactive. By a server monitoring software such as Heartbeat the second server can take over the function of the first server and continue working with the same data.
