The Earth simulator is a Japanese supercomputer, which is based on vector processors. The parallel computer system was put 2002 at the Yokohama of institutes for to Earth Sciences by the company NEC into operation.
For the Earth simulator was established particularly a building in the district Kanazawa of the city Yokohama, prefecture Kanagawa, large for it conceived 3,250 m2.
In the TOP500-Liste was the Earth simulator of June 2002 to June 2004 with an arithmetic performance of 36 Teraflops as fastest computers of the world on place 1. In the list from November 2004 it was overhauled however from equivalent two computers (IBM BlueGene/L as well as SGIs Columbia) and is in the expenditure from November 2005 only because of seventh place.
