The EFnet is an IRC network. The name stands for Eris Free Net. It was part of the original first IRC network, which developed in August 1988. Beside the mythologischen reference to the Greek divinity Eris attained EFnet its name particularly by the former server eris.berkeley.edu - these unloved servers it was noticeable above all by the fact that he permitted arbitrary other IRC servers to the connection unchecked (open C-LINEs), what was used probably plentifully to the abuse. After the omission of this unloved server one celebrated the network as Eris free. EFnet counts despite various splitting off today with approximately 80,000 Clients still to the largest five IRC networks, beside Quakenet, IRCnet, Undernet and DALnet.

History

The birth of IRC (and thus the forerunner of the EFnet) was in August 1988 - the exact birthday is recognized according to Jarkko Oikarinen, the mental father of the IRC, unknown HTTP: The purpose of the network was original to make communication possible between Finnish universities. In addition, faster than expected the interest grew outside of Finland to be part of a global Chatsystems. Already two years later, in July 1990 were involved 38 servers in the first IRC network.

In August 1990 the first splitting off carried out itself; some servers wound themselves from the EFnet off and formed the Anarchy NET (Anet). Also the this very day valid name developed, since eris.berkely.edu left the IRC network by this splitting. and most well-known splitting took place however in May 1997: Due to technical differences the European part at that time of the net split itself off and formed from now on the IRCnet, while the American part continued from now on as EFnet. Trip of these as The Great Splithttp: /www.irc.org/history_docs/TheGreatSplit.html into IRC history entered separation was an open controversy over the technical measures for fight so mentioned nods Collisions - EFnet preferred a method named TS (TimeStamp), while IRCnet on nod Delay set. In addition it concerned to administrators the rights from IRC operators and -. The EFnet supported here relatively free guidelines, while the representatives of the IRCnet planned a strict regimentation.

In the long run one could not agree, which wetted for the final separation of the two led. Nevertheless are today both IRCnet and EFnet with the most important and largest IRC nets at all.

EFnet was considered and is today still considered as one of the puristischten IRC nets: In contrast to the Quakenet or DALnet there is no possibility Nicknames or Channels to register. Only 2001 became a service named CHANFIXhttp: imported, which makes it possible to re-establish Channels without operator. This happens on the basis an algorithm, which uses the regular operator automatically in case of the loss of all Ops on the basis an internal point table again.
