The operating system EPOC was developed by Psion for PDAs (personnel digitally Assistants).

EPOC is a multitasking able 32 bits operating system. It is considered as very stable, offers an intermediate file, printer support, and the possibility of inserting objects from other applications into documents. In EPOC some are contained Office of programs amazingly efficient for PDA conditions. They made EPOC in Business circles very popular.

Epoc is conceived for keyboard PDA. They are in principle like a Nootebook developed, thus split in keyboard and screen. There is also an adapted version for Eric on mobile phone the R380, which is served with the Touchscreen.

History

With "„EPOC "“usually Epoc32 is meant, which came out 1997 for 32-Bit-Bit-Prozessoren of the arm family. Psion supplied the models Series 5, Series 5mx, Series 5mx PRO (this model was driven out only in Germany), to Revo with, Revo plus, Series 7, netBook and netpad with EPOC out.

The previous version EPOC16 ran starting from 1989 on Psions SIBO devices, and/or 16-Bit-Prozessoren of the 8086-Familie. Psion sold the devices MC200, MC400, Series 3, Series 3a, Series 3c, Series 3mx, Siena, Workabout and Workabout MX with this operating system version. The Workabout for industrielle applications was manufactured into the year 2004. The advancement of the operating system was separated 1998 into the company Symbian, in whatever beside Psion Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia took part. Renaming in Symbian OS took place with EPOC version 6.

Operation

Small development environment for OPL programs.

Alarm and world times as well as telephone preselections, sun up and - fall etc.

Licensee

Already 1997 appeared itself more successfully with Geofox, although little, licensees for EPOC. With the Osaris of Oregon Scientific and the MC218 von Ericsson appeared further products on the basis of EPOC. The versions 2 and 3 were available for the Series 5 and the Geofox One, version 4 for the Osaris. Interesting Philips Illium Smartphone anticipated Sony Ericsson P800/P900 Design with Touchscreenbedienung, however the ready for the market one did not create.

All other models specified above as well as the mobile telephone R380 von Ericsson ran with the version 5, the latter however with a university code variant and an own surface without expandability.
