Ethernet power left is a minutes extension to the Ethernet standard after IEEE 802,3, in order to transmit real time data in the microsecond range.

Overview

Ethernet power left was developed from the outset with consideration on standard conformity. It extends Ethernet by a mixed Polling and time slice mechanism. Thus one reaches

  • the guaranteed transmission of time-critical data in very short isochronous cycles with configurable time performance
  • the temporal synchronisation of all network knots with very high precision in the Sub Mikrosekundenbereich
  • the transmission of the less time-critical data arising in the reserved asynchronous channel

Current implementations of Ethernet power left reach cycle times of under and temporal precision (jitter) of better than

Object listing

All communication objects and all user objects are summarized in the object listing (OV). The OV is in the EPL the link between application and the EPL Kommunikationseinheit.Jeder entry in the object listing stands for an object and by a 16-Bit-Index is marked. An index can contain again up to 256 Subindizes. Thus utilizable entries per equipment can be differentiated up to 65536 254. In profiles the allocation from communication and equipment profile objects to a respective index is defined and with the object listing a clear interface between application and communication outward is thus defined exactly.

For a set of device classes equipment profiles were defined. These equipment profiles define functionality and the structure of the object listing for the respective equipmentby the use of devices, which correspond to a certain profile, a higher independence from equipment manufacturers erreicht.EPL used thereby the equipment profiles of CAN open transformation rules to put thereby firmly, which objects are used CAN open equipmentprofile with EPL devices. Is considered to the fact that with EPL the length of the utilizable packets (PDOs) is larger.

Further minutes

All IP-based minutes on higher layers, like TCP, UDP and over it, can be used without change in the Ethernet power left network. In detail Ethernet supports power left the following standards:

  • IEEE 802,3 nearly Ethernet
  • IP-based minutes (UDP, TCP, etc.)
  • Standard of equipment profiles: CAN open EN 50325-4 for automation
  • IEEE 1588 real time domains synchronisation (future versions)

Electronics Datasheets

For the use of EPL devices electronic data sheets, are necessary so-called EDS files. These files in a standardized XML format e.g. describe both the most important parameters of the objects of the object listings of equipment and further parameters like the supported Kommunikationsdienste.Konfigurationstools can EDS files in read and with their assistance with the respective equipment communicate and it if necessary parameterize.

Standardisation

Ethernet power left is developed further and specified of the open user and group of offerers of EPSG (Ethernet power left Standardization Group) as open standard.

Various

Ethernet power left should not with power of over Ethernet, which current supply over (unused) the conductors, are confounded.
