A Exterior gateway minutes (EGP) serves for it to exchange accessibility information between autonomous systems (AS) i.e. information about it, which nets are attainable. These data set then rout the autonomous systems into internal routing information for OSPF or Routing Information Protocol (RIP) over.

An EGP has 3 substantial functions in the reason:

  • Neighbours specify: Two rout from two different AS inform themselves with one another whether it EGP partners to become to want.
  • Accessibility of the neighbours: Within certain time intervals it is examined whether the EGP partners are still attainable.
  • Accessibility of networks: That is the major task of EGP. EGP partners receive a list on request of attainable networks in the autonomous systems of the neighbours.

The only at present still assigned EGP is the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).
