The Federal Office for security in the information technology (BSI) is one in the federal city Bonn resident civilian upper federal authority in the division Federal Ministry of the inside (BMI), which is responsible for questions of IT-security. In the BSI more than 400 coworkers are busy. Present president is helmet-broken to Dr. Udo.

History

The BSI was created 1991. It came out from the central office for security in the information technology (ZSI), whose predecessor authority was those the Federal Information Service (Federal Intelligence Service) subordinated central office for the coding nature (ZfCh). The mathematician Dr. Otto body Erich, since 1957 with the Federal Intelligence Service and there last directors/conductors of the ZfCh, was a first president of the BSI.

After separating Dr. Otto body Erich to 31. Dezember1992 reached Dr. Dirk Henze with effect the 1. Januar1993 to the new BSI president orders.

After separating Dr. Dirk Henze in November 2002 was ordered Dr. Udo helmet-broken in March 2003 to the new BSI president.

Departments and tasks

The BSI is divided into four departments, of which one is responsible for functions of the administration. Besides there is a line staff and a range for internal IT-organization and enterprise. The three departments with technical tasks consist in each case of specialist areas (FB), which are for their part again divided into different Referate.

  • Department 1 - Security in applications, critical infrastructures and in the Internet
    • FB 11 - Security in applications
    • FB 12 - Security in critical infrastructures and in the Internet
  • Department 2 - Cryptology and hearing security
    • FB 21 - Kryptotechnik
    • FB 22 - Hearing security
    • Jurisdiction cryptography
  • Department 3 - Conformity examinations, certifying and permission
    • FB 31 - New technologies and conformity projects
    • FB 32 - Conformity examinations
  • Department of Z - Administration

The BSI publishes the IT-Grundschutzhandbuch, which contains recommendations for standard preventive measures for typical IT-systems with normal protection need. In this manual not only technical, but also organizational, personnel and infrastructural measures are discussed.

The BSI is the central certification body for the security of IT-systems in Germany (computer and data security, data security). Examination and certifying are possible regarding the standards of the IT-Grundschutzhandbuch, for the green book, ITSEC and the Common criteria.

In order to promote alternatives to commercial products, the BSI uses itself strengthened for the employment and the development of open SOURCE software.

Tasks of department 1 - security in applications, critical infrastructures and in the Internet

The department 1 is arranged within papers, which work on specific tasks and Verantwortungen. It is led by Dr. Hartmut Isselhorst.

Specialist area 11 - Security in applications

The specialist area 11 answers for the following tasks:

  • IT-Grundschutz
  • IT-Sicherheitsberatung
  • Security of the government networks
  • Communication security during business processes
  • PKI in public administrations of the federation
  • High availability solutions

Specialist area 12 - Security in critical infrastructures and in the Internet

The specialist area 12 answers for the following tasks:

  • Protection of the critical infrastructures of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • Enterprise CERT federation
  • Execution of penetration tests
  • Internet security generally
  • Research, analysis of mark commodity and viruses
  • Secure platforms

Tasks of department 2 - cryptology and hearing security

The department 2 is arranged within papers, which work on specific tasks and Verantwortungen. It is led by Dr. Gerhard

The department 2 contains the classical tasks of the central office for the coding nature (ZfCh)

Specialist area 21 - Kryptotechnik

The specialist area 21 is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Production of IT-Sicherheitsarchitekturen and - platforms
  • Development of Kryptokomponenten and - systems
  • Evaluation of Kryptosystemen
  • Krypto and IT-Sicherheitsadministration
  • Development of cryptographic procedures

Specialist area 22 - Hearing security

The specialist area 22 is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Security in mobile applications
  • Radiation security
  • Technical surveillance countermeasureses
  • Material security

Tasks of department 3 - conformity examinations, certifying and permission

The department 3 is arranged within papers, which work on specific tasks and Verantwortungen. It is led by Bernd Kowalski.

Specialist area 31 - New technologies and conformity projects

The specialist area 31 is responsible for the following tasks:

  • New technologies
  • Perspective technology analysis
  • Industrial co-operation
  • Sovereign documents and electronic documents of identification

Specialist area - conformity examinations

The specialist area 31 is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Information, communication and public work
  • Distribution and execution of certifying
  • Permission and test standard
  • Accreditation and quality management

Tasks of department of Z - administration

The department of Z under the direction of refuge Samsel makes internal services available, which have the essentially following extent:
