freenode, in former times as open Projects network (OPN) admits, is an IRC network its sense and goal it is a free and sturdy communication platform for the open SOURCE municipality to be offered. Its coworkers are honorary active. Nut/mother organization of the freenode network is the Non profit organization Peer Directed Projects center (PDPC) which the project promotes and financed. The different IRC servers are designated, so for instance after well-known writers Goethe, Lem or Tolkien.

Meanwhile the network is that at home several well-known open SOURCE projects, like the operating systems Debian, Fedora, Gentoo or GNU.

Historical

freenode was created on 29 January 1994 as small support channel #linuxneo in the IRC network EFnet of Rob Levin (lilo) and Pauline Middelink, in order to establish an alternative to the channel #linux in the EFnet. Because in this actual Linux Supportkanal #linux newcomers were seen no longer gladly and Linux were not the topic about that were also more really spoken. After mehrmonatiger moved then in the August of the same yearly for the first time somewhat and the channel after Paulines suggestion renamed into #linpeople. This Chatkanal continued to move now first from the EFnet to Undernet and then into the DALnet. 1995 one referred its own IRC server, which one operated at a ISDN line: irc.linpeople.org. 1998 took place the establishment of the open Projects network (OPN).

In August 2002 the project was integrated into the PDPC and renamed too freenode.

In August 2005 the conversion of the server often commodity took place from dancer ircd on Hyperion. This made possible among other things in the host MASK the identification of registered Nicknames.
