Fruit is a chess program developed by Fabien Letouzey from France, which up to the version 2.1 as open SOURCE software was developed. Since the version 2.2 the development does not take place any longer sourceopen, the source code of the last free version is available however further in the Internet. With Fruit it acts only only a chess engine, so that for playing still additionally a user surface is needed like for example arena. The program uses for it UCI minutes for communication with chess-front-ends.
With the WBEC Ridderkerk edition 10 (Winboard Chess engine Competition), a large automated comparison tournament for chess programs, reached the version 2.0 of Fruit in the Prime Minister division, the highest Leistungsgruppe, the 14. Place of 24 programs and reserves thereby in the WBEC Ridderkerk rank list seat 14 with a Rating likewise by 2.631. An impressing result obtained the new version 2.1 with the test passage in the context of the CSS rank list of the magazine "computer chess and play". The program could increase in this list in relation to the previous version 2,0 by impressing 95 Elopunkte on a Rating of 2.747. Thus that occupied old program the second place on the CSS rank list only somewhat over one year and lay thereby also before all commercial programs with exception of Shredder version 9. From the 24 Matches Fruit version lost 2.1 thereby only two.
With the world championship in computer chess 2005 in Reykjavik Fruit version occupied 2.1 behind the Freeware program Zappa likewise the second place and left thereby Shredder in this tournament behind itself. It could strike thereby beside Shredder also Deep junior and won thereby against the two highly favored commercial programs. Fruit lost Zappa and the program Diep, which achieved the sieved place in this tournament only against the later winner. Very good cutting off of Fruit is surprising also, because Fruit played contrary to the other point programs such as Zappa, Shredder and Deep junior on a computer with only one processor, since it is so far not yet multi-processorable. At present current version 2.2.1 can access also the final game data bases.
The source text of the last freely available version 2.1 is used of some developers as basis for independent advancement. To this Engines derived from Fruit for example Toga II of the German programmer Thomas Gaksch belongs. A further engine on the basis of Fruit 2,1, into which beyond that also extensions from Toga II were integrated, is GambitFruit of the American Ryan Benitez.
