The GBR code (after Guy, Roycroft and Blandford) describes the position on a chessboard by a simple character string, which is clear for positions with "„normal "“material. For positions with three or more figures of a sort additional data are needed, in order to describe the position accurately.

The GBR code can be used as index among other things in data bases and publications of study collections, frequently the figure positions (3 are void. Part).

Structure

The GBR code is divided into four parts in each case from one point to be separated:

  1. A sequence of numbers four digit indicates the figure number. From left to right the number of ladies, towers, to see runners and Springer. For each white figure and for each black figure three points will assign. If a side possesses more than three equal figures of a kind, the number is no longer clear. This makes the employment more difficult as own diagram code system.
  2. Number of farmers (first white, then black)
  3. The positions of the figures (in each case white before black) in the order king, lady, tower, runner, Springer
  4. The positions of the farmers (in each case white before black) indicated.
