The German research net (DFN) is a high speed net for science and research in Germany. It connects universities and research establishments in the Internet. The technical basis for the German research net is the science net X-WiN, the successor of the G-WiN.

The high speed nets for theory and research in Germany are administered as communication infrastructure of the science community (organize in the DFN registered association). The association was created 1984 by universities, non-university research establishments and researchnear business enterprises with the goal of promoting computer-aided communication to Germany.

Chairman of the board is Professor Dr. Wilfried Juling. Further members of the executive committee are nat Professor Dr. rer. Bernhard Neumair of the GwDG as well as Dr. iur. Franc Nolden, chancellor of the University of Leipzig.
