The term header error check or English header error check designates a testing method with AT, with which it is determined whether an at cell became to receive wrongly.

In addition the head contains an error correction sequence (HEC, header error code according to a FCS (Frame check Sum or Frame check Sequence) of at cell (header) in the fifth and last byte. It serves the error handling of the cell head, mainly however the examination whether the cell borders in the received bit stream were recognized correctly. The receiver computed with the receipt constantly the HEC byte which can be expected and compares it with that, which he gets sent. If they do not agree, it corrects first the cell header when far sending the cell. After some errors without break successively the receiver assumes however he lost the synchronisation and starts a new synchronisation of the receiver. Because of this procedure AT is asynchronously called: it permits a far higher deviation to the synchronisation of net elements, than it is possible with PDH. This solution with AT aimed at the integration data traffic, which can come contrary to the telephone networks of completely unsynchronisierten sources of private users, clocked central with high accuracy. Only late developed synchronisation procedures of the SDH were able to strike that from AT to by a further increase of the tolerance with the clock rates.
