IBM 3270 PC (type 5271), presented in October 1983, was strictly speaking an IBM PC XT, which however for the emulation of a terminal of the type IBM 3270 contained for the time of the publication the still necessary auxiliary hardware. So the 3270 PC both and usual single place computer could be used, and and terminals in the host terminal system.
In addition was available the 3270 RKs (type 5281). It corresponds to that 3270 PC, however on basis IBM PC RK in place of PC XT as basic model. For an explanation of the technical differences between the two devices, see IBM PC RK.
The auxiliary hardware reserved nearly the complete seat in the computer, which was intended for extensions. It covered a multipart, programmable diagram map extension from TTL components. In order to meet the higher diagram requirements 3270, a CGA compatible diagram map with slightly dissolution was blocked. A further extension card intercepted the signals of the provided PC/3270-Tastatur, processed the 3270-Tastencodes, and passed the PC key codes on for the normal keyboard connection. For the connection to the host computer - usually a IBM Mainframe - provided a further plug-in card, which made a 3270-kompatible available serial interface.
