3270 is the name for a series of terminals of the company IBM. The first screen terminals of the type 3270 were announced 1972. They replaced the up to then usual typewriter terminals with the expenditure medium continuous form.

The model 3270 made possible to introduce it on a large scale applications of on-line. The screen could be formatted by programming, in and output fields be defined. After the user actions only the changed data had to be conveyed. The inputs of the users were buffered in the equipment or in a control unit and conveyed only after operation of the enter key or a function key to the central computer.

The first 3270-Modelle was mono chrome and supported texts with simple or double brightness. Besides fields without visible text (for example to the input of passwords) could be defined. Later also color screens (8 colors), inverse representation, underlined text and flashing text were supported. The number of function keys was increased of 12 to 24 and beside the standard models with a dissolution of indication developed such with 43—80 and indication. Special models supported also vector diagram and the APL character set.

The programming of 3270-Anwendungen on assembler level was very As easement Mapping support (BMS) served service and with TSO/ISPF the panel definitions with CIM of the Message format, with CICS of the basic.

Today hardly still terminals are in the use. However isolated still operational areas exist, in which the terminal is preferred to a PC. Most the today still remaining 3270-Anwendungen use frequently a terminal emulator on a PC. By IBM gave it in addition IBM to the 3270 PC; a usual IBM PC XT with hardware for the emulation 3270, to which a special diagram map as well as a PC/3270-Tastatur belonged. For Windows for example IBM personnel Communications, Attachmate extra or main header left 3270 and/or terminal edition exist.

For the home user, for example a TN3270 service to access would like (particularly within the range of American libraries still usually) or by means of Hercules a large computer emulated, a favorable solution exists with Vista TN3270. For Linux there is x3270, which in addition various programs for Skripte contains. Linux/390 supports 3270 terminals.

The transmission protocol was originally BTAM, late VTAM. Today TCP/IP is used. Further a special telnet variant, is used TN3270.
