InterAsterisk eXchange (Abk. IAX) is minutes, which by the open SOURCE telephone system Asterisk is used. It serves thereby both for the connection between individual Asterisk servers and for communication for terminals, with which thus Voice of over IP discussions are possible.

IAX/IAX2 offers some advantages contrary to other common VoIP minutes such as H.323 or SIP with the IP-Telefonie, since it has a less structure of the Protokolles. In the detail, for the signaling process and for the transmission of the Audiostream only one haven is needed, which is kept open on the part of the Clients. Thus no NAT and/or Firewall of problems usually arises as a result of the use of IAX minutes, how it occurs when using of the SIP or H.323.

By the smaller Overhead of the IAX/IAX2-Protokolls compared with SIP or H.323, G.729 themselves are over those approx. 38kBit Upload analog modem possible for VoIP connections in combination with a narrow band codec like e.g. GSM, iLBC.

The goals of IAX

The following characteristics were the principal purposes of the development of IAX:

  • the used range for should be so small as possible,
  • special attention was on the controlling of the transmission and an individual language connection,
  • and a NAT support should be already inserted.

IAX can transfer therefore over an individual UDP connection control signals and several discussions and/or video messages between two computers and/or terminals. IAX is binary minutes, where the range is very well used. In few places Mark has Spencer itself decided somewhat more overall bandwidth to use to be more efficient for it however with single discussions.
