iPAQ a line of personnel is digital Assistants (PDAs), which was originally manufactured by Compaq. Since they are sold to the assumption of Compaq by Hewlett-Packard under the HP label.

As operating system pocket PC von Microsoft is used, who is to be used PC similarly for the well-known Windows operating systems of Desktop. The operation is made by a Touchscreen, often necessary applications on separate buttons is put (e.g. Calendar, addresses, etc.). The input of text is made by means of a display screen keyboard on the Touschscreen or by handwriting recognition. By plug-on modules (so-called Jackets) the first PDAs of this Names could be extended by additional functions.

Although in the original state the operating system pocket PC is installed, there is a large municipality, it it's duty already made Linux on iPAQ to portieren. This municipality is supported actively (among other things with financial means) by HP. (see also OPIE)

HP is strengthened into the criticism guessed/advised in the year 2004 in the course of its iPAQ line, since no updates were offered on current operating system generations. When argument specified HP here among other things that an adjustment of the software on the existing devices (devices, which were longer one year and in the trade, had been meant, thus all devices produced to date) of a majority at users was desired and one doubted that users would be ready the price high with the small demand to pay. Before, insignificantly after the releases operating system Windows mobile 2003-SE, had already Toshiba for products e400 and primarily e800, which at the time of the main innovation, to which support for VGA displays profited, Upgrades publishes.

In the year 2005 HP for the Produkserien hx2100, hx2400, hx2700 and hx4700 a Upgrade announced on the current version 5.0 of the operating system, Windows mobile. Meanwhile the updates for approximately 50"€ are to be had.

Technology

Before the assumption of Compaq iPAQs with an extended interface were delivered. It made possible to extend it the PDA with so-called Sleeves (also Jackets called). Those are mounting plates, into which the PDA can be slid and which different functions to make available. There were Sleeves with Compact Flash Slot and with PCMCIA Slot (also dual PCMCIA Slot) and of both Sleeves in each case versions with and without integrated Akku. Later also versions with Bluetooth, VGA connection, government inspection department and other extensions were developed.

Starting from the H3800'er-Generation the Dockingport was revised and until remained today alike. This makes the use of old hardware possible at new devices. However the positioning at the PDA makes occasionally problems, so that the hardware would function electrically, physically however does not fit and at adjustment work requires something. Besides some series have no serial connection. HP the connection with these devices 180 degrees.

Use

iPAQ the models were meant straight in the start time for the professional employment. By large expandabilities, straight by the PCMCIA Sleeve was underlined this. Thus it became possible to use conventional laptop technology directly in a PDA. Only the drivers had to be adapted. Some manufacturers offer also today still devices, in order to connect iPAQ devices for example directly with government inspection department, measuring instruments, tactical (military) radios, WLAN and modem or with non removable disks, digital cameras, to rig RFID vintage/recorders. Many of these extensions are in the meantime also available for other PDA. iPAQ was not the first PDA, which offered this extension variety, but it was the equipment, which had a so high spreading as the first that this was attractive for manufacturers.

Film and television

Also devices of the H5500 and H5400 again and again appear series in most diverse films or TV-series. So for example in or.

Sorted according to sales date of the first models. Most models of the old series still come from Compaq.

  • The Samsung processor works clearly more efficiently than the XScale CCUs of the series of 250/255, which are used into other PDAs of this generation. Thus the h1940 reaches the achievement level of PDAs with 400MHz-PXA255 processor despite smaller clock rate approximately and exceeds PXA255-350MHz of devices clearly. Most frequent annoyance with this series were navigation keys difficult to operate and a rapid aging (loss of capacity) of the provided Akkus, which shortens the anyway rather moderate Akkulaufzeit clearly again.

    H2200

Due to a production error the rubber side parts of this series became the annoyance. Many users replaced it by versions from aluminum.
