When IRC Daemon, briefly, the Daemon (server software) designated IRCd, which is used with an IRC server in the Internet Relay Chat.
The IRCd receives connections of IRC Clients and other IRC servers and develops if necessary connections to other IRC servers, in order to form with these an IRC network. Major task is it to take Chats against and the individual messages between the IRC Clients, thus the interlocutors to mediate.
The first IRCd was developed as free software 1988 of Jarkko Oikarinen. Most IRC networks use a IRCd, which on this original software be based, but one adapted strongly to individual needs. Only few IRCds are actually complete new developments of reason up, and these are liable to pay the costs mostly. The version of the IRCds can be queried in the IRC with the instruction /version.
IRC services can be seen and had as extension of the IRCd many thing in common with this that alone already follows from the fact that they are tied up at the network often like an additional IRC server.
IRC Daemons are in all rule only one system process without Threads, which among other things historical reasons, how the old source text basis with the earlier technical conditions has. This makes (e) special demands against the organization of the software: In order to make a real-time Chat possible, the process may block at no time longer in a certain place and/or wait for external actions. For this reason for example DNS inquiries are often accomplished by an internal resolver, instead of over operating system functions.
