An IRC server is a fundamental component in the Internet Relay Chat. Chatpartner, which chatten over IRC want, connect themselves with their IRC Client to an IRC server in the same IRC network. The major task of the IRC servers lies then to obtain discussion contents between the Chattern.

Technology

By the principle to connect the IRC Clients only indirectly by the IRC server with one another instead of the IRC Client directly among themselves, Channel become only possible. A message, which comes from a IRC Client and is addressed to a Channel, is distributed by the server to all other IRC Clients, which participate in the same Channel. If the Clients would be directly among themselves connected, this would be otherwise not too efficiently possible.

Within IRC networks one differentiates with respect to Leaf and stroke servers. Leaf servers receive Client connections and are connected with maximally another server, to which they transfer if necessary contents. Stroke servers can be with several other servers and distribute routes and/or discussion contents on a meaningful way between the servers.

As IRC server becomes also the assigned software, which so-called IRC Daemon designates.
