The IRCNet is one of the largest IRC networks of the world and has for the moment approximately one hundred thousand users.
The IRCNet was a European splitting off from the EFnet, after in July 1996 a discrepancy had been inflamed over the regulation of the powers of the system operators. In the rules of the IRCNets the power of the operators (IRC ops) is defined clearly. Many of the American EFNet servers rejected this regulation.
The idea of an independent network smoldered already some time, when an American IRC stroke, which represented the highway circuit to the European IRC server, interrupted this connection without preliminary warning. Thereupon a group of European administrators defined itself as independent. All European EFnet servers changed the EFNet servers to IRCNet, later were added still made of Japan and Australia.
The network contains also the oldest IRC server of the world at all. It was decided that the network was to accept the name IRCNet. Before it this name was generally used for all IRC of networks. Before the name was specified, the network under "European EFnet" was well-known.
