IrLAP corresponds to the data communication layer in the OSI Schichtenmodell. It relies thereby on those half duplex minutes HDLC and SDLC.
One of the most important characteristics is the concept of the primary and secondary stations. The primary station (exactly one) has the responsibility for the connection. The secondary station consists of one (with Point-to-Point) or several (with POINT ton multi-POINT) connections. All transmissions go from or to the primary station. In principle each station may take over the role of the primary, if it is implementation in addition able. The primary station is determined with the connection establishment and remains it up to the connection clearing. This fact remains however hidden behind the IrLAP service-primitive, so that it does not play a role during their description.
IrLAP uses most the HDLC Standardrahmenformate. There are unnummerierte (unnumbered) U-frameworks, monitoring (supervisory) S-frameworks and information I-framework. U-frameworks become for functions as connectingon and - dismantling or looking for for other devices (discovery) uses. With I-frameworks information is transmitted from a station to the other one and S-frameworks to serve for the support of the information transfer to confirm thus for example in order a packet explicitly (I-frameworks can implicitly likewise confirm other I-frameworks) or for river control.
In addition IrLAP contains functions to connectingon and - dismantling with arrangement of the quality of the connection (data transmission rate, Timeoutzeiten etc.), for the determination of the addresses of devices in range and for the dissolution of address conflicts.
