IS-IS (Intermediate system ton of Intermediate system Protocol) is a left State Interior Gateway Protocol (similar OSPF), which by ISO standard 10589 is specified. Originally IS-IS for the use with connectingless minutes CLNP was sketched, the support for the employment with IP became possible by extensions.

IS-IS knows three Message types:

1. Hello (Intermediate system ton of Intermediate system Hello): Capability Announcement and Neighbor Discovery serves the function
2. LSP (left State PDU (Protocol DATA unit)): transport network-topological information as well as IP, CLNP and IPv6-Adressen
3. SNP (Sequence NUMBER PDU): serves for terminating the proclamation and that differentiate of old and new updates of left State data bases between routing

IS-IS experiences one Renaissance surprisingly since center of the 90's with American and European network carriers. The reason for this is to be seen very simple in the very minimalistic and thus to implementing minutes architecture. In addition the first IS-IS implementation of the manufacturer was Cisco (one of the pioneers among the IP routing manufacturers) of substantially durable as e.g. the OSPF implementation, which induced many network carriers to use IS-IS minutes.
