KPhone is not a free, commercial IP-Telefonie (Voice over IP) - software and is licensed with the GNU general Public License (GPL). KPhone is based on session the Initiation Protocol (SIP). The surface uses the Qt Toolkit. KPhone runs under Linux and on platforms, for which the appropriate compilers and libraries are present.

With KPhone one can manufacture connections over Internet, possible is at present language and Instant the Messaging. Video transmission is possible with the external application vic. Other applications can be called in the KPhone SI than so-called "“external applications"”. An example are the "“MBONE Tools"” like vic and wbd. Unfortunately a "“NAT Traversal"” is not at present possible with this Tools. The latter sets symmetrical signaling vorraus, what out these applications do not carry.

With help of IP telephone IE offerers can be telephoned also in the normal telephone network (against payment).

Bad language quality can be improved, by increasing the Payload of 80 to 160 in the menu "“audio options"”. Alternatively one can use one of the codecs GSM instead of the G711u codec, iLBC or Speex. These need less range than the G711u, however the sound quality can be smaller.

The possible values for module name:

• kphone (kphone 4,2, the classical kphone)
• kphone vic (video application, unfortunately not usable if ACCESS-rout with NAT in the play is!)
• kphoneSI (newer current kphone version with extensions)

Both KPhone variants contain a file with name INSTALL, in which notes for providing and installing are specified.

KPhoneSI has its own user manual written in HTML. This is contained to the extent of the source code.
