Loop-bake or a Schleifenschaltung is a realigning or an information channel with only one terminator point, so that transmitters and receivers are identical. In the communicationses Loopbacks are usually used, in order to examine the accessibility of a goal. In this way both the message channel to the goal and the goal are examined. Usually the message channel consists of several lying one behind the other data links. As the Schleifenschaltung is made successively at all terminator points of the data links, the entire way up to the goal can be examined and be found a possible interruption. There are generally different types of Loopbacks:

  1. Loopbacks, with which the receiving station back-sharpens the received signal both to the transmitter, and invariably to the goal passes on.
  2. Loopbacks, with which the receiving station back-sharpens the received signal to the transmitter and which instead of this signal an alarm Indication signal feeds a goal.

Loop-bake in the Internet Protocol

The Internet Protocol (IP) specifies a loop baking network. With IPv4 it has the CIDR addresses 127.0.0.1 to 127.255.255.254. Most IP conversions support a loop baking loop, whereby all packages, which a computer program sends to these addresses, to which same computer are addressed. The most frequently used IP address of a loop baking network is the address 127.0.0.1 (IPv4) and/or:: 1 (IPv6). The standard for Domainnamen of these addresses is local host.

On Unix similar systems the loop baking interface is generally called lo or lo0.

The loop baking interface is used among other things by Client software, in order to communicate with a server on the same computer.

An example: On a computer a Web server runs. If one indicates now to the Browser as URL http://127.0.0.1/, this will access the web page of the own computer. Since for it no network connection is necessary, is loop-bake quite helpfully, in order to examine different services, without making it accessible for distant access.

In all other respects it is a popular testing method, the loop baking interface too pin towards, in order to verify the correct function TCP/IP stack.

Loop baking addresses are often used in the Internet, in order to lead beginners at the nose around. An inexperienced user, who thinks, it seizes on strange server too (or attack this), accomplishes so these actions on its own computer. Many users are conscious itself that 127.0.0.1 stands for its own computer, but not that (e.g.) 127.34.123.43 exactly the same to it refers.

Packages, which are sent to an existing IP network with the return address of a loop baking interface, can represent a larger number of problems for older or incorrect network often commodity. If these packages with intention are produced, one speaks of IP-Spoofing.
