The Macintosh LC (LC stands for Low Cost; low price) started at the beginning of the 90's of Apple product family for the home computer market. The first Macintosh LC 1990 came on the market and were primarily meant for private users, pupils and students. The price was to be achieved consciously low set around customers, who used up to then no Apple Macintosh.
Together with the Macintosh IIsi was the Macintosh LC the first Macintosh with audio entrance. The name "LC" stands in the following years for a whole line of computers for the private user.
For the Macintosh LC Apple used a very flat housing, which brought in the pointed name "Pizzabox" for it. The interior offered straight enough place for" - floppy disk drive and a non removable disk in half overall height to 3.5. Over the Main board with 16 MHz 68020 processor finds straight still another extender card their place. The Macintosh LC has no mathematical coprocessor. The 16 bits data bus and the maximum memory development of 10 MByte RAM limit the efficiency of the computer. Altogether the achievement of the Macintosh LC was disappointing:
The Macintosh LC delivered with 256 kByte video RAM. During a screen resolution of 512x384 pixels thereby the representation of 256 colors or 640x480 pixel with 16 colors is possible. After an extension video RAM to 512 kByte can 32,768 colors in the small dissolution be represented. Apple offered particularly for the Macintosh LC 12 a " spot frequency monitor to only the dissolution of 512x384 pixels supported. Unfortunately this unusual display format was not supported by many programs, very much Macintosh software presupposes as minimum dissolution the VGA standard (640x480 pixel).
Also without NuBus Slots there was a set of extension cards for the Processor Direct Slot (Party of Democratic Socialism) of the Macintosh LC. Original it was to be accepted in addition thought an Apple IIe emulation map and should in the surrounding field from schools and universities the wide-spread Apple IIe replace. For the Party of Democratic Socialism of the Macintosh LC by third offerers a set of accelerator maps and network maps was developed. Ethernet maps for the Party of Democratic Socialism were equipped with their own ROM, so that these maps without own drivers in the MacOS are merged. Much is also armament with to 68882 as Party of Democratic Socialism extension card likes.
The Macintosh LC sold itself well and to 1992 from the Macintosh LC II with Motorola 68030 processor was replaced. The name "LC" was used by Apple later also for power PC models and disappeared only with introduction of the IMac from the program.
