Media gateway is a general name for a net function, which is used in NEXT generation network and for example in the IP-Telefonie. It sets "“media"” (Multimediainformationen, like here digitally coded speaking, audio or picture information to be designated) of a type of a network in another type over.

For example a Media gateway can line-obtained B-channels of the ISDN schedule and from the language information RTP Media Streams for a IP-based package network, transferred into it, produce. In the opposite direction it implements the reverse conversion, it works thus full-duplex. It can transcodieren the language information.

Multimedia Streams often contain a combination of audio, video, and T.120-Medien. A Media gateway is able to convert each combination of it and to complete also conferences of several participants.

The entire gateway function, which makes a connecting possible of the different net types, sits down together from the Media gateway, to the Media gateway CONTROLLER and the Signalling gateway. The concept formation is here not yet final. Frequently the Signalling gateway is called now (conditions 2004/2005) soft SWITCH, while straight in older literature the overall system from medium and Signalling function than soft SWITCHes is designated.
