A Metropolitan Area Network or a briefly MAN ONE is a wide-band telecommunications net realized in glass fiber technology, which is developed in circular structure predominantly and which interconnects most important office centers of a large city. A MAN ONE can have an expansion up to 100 km.
MANs are often developed by internationally active telecommunications companies, which interlace then verkabelte metropolises in this way again in a Wide AREA network (WAN) national or even internationally global AREA network (GAN) again.
In Germany an appropriate net under the name DATEX m was taken by the German Telekom in the year 1992 in enterprise, which used the SMDS technology in such a way specified. End of 2002 were in Berlin, Duesseldorf, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart metropolitan AREA networks of the DTAG in enterprise. At this time already 26 German cities were merged into goose.
In the meantime networks exist also in other technology than the SMDS technology even in nearly all German large cities, which interconnect the quarters, which exhibit a high office density in most diverse net topologies. There is German Telekom about 20 (conditions except the former monopoly owner: 2004) further "alternative network carriers so mentioned" in Germany, which shifted glass fiber TZE for this purpose, in the meantime preferably in SDH technology.
The coming technology for glass fiber TZE in the Metrobereich is Metro Ethernet.
