NEXT generation network (NGN) is a term from telecommunications, which a communications network is named, by the convergence of conventional nets (telephone networks, portable radio nets, etc.) with IP-based nets arises.

A NGN is characterised by an architecture, which essentially consists of the following components:

Media gateway
which connect the individual nets physically and for the transmission of information provide - inclusively thereby for necessary format and data conversion, and
Softswitches
which steer the Media gateway, and for example connections over all net borders away up and diminish.

Contrary to a conventional switching system, which comparable functional components in itself united (even if only for net types), one assumes Media gateways and Softswitches are separate systems, which are set up at different places also. Strongly simplified represented a conventional switching system is divided physically into two parts, whereby appropriate gateway functions are added. In addition it comes that the soft SWITCH can be realized again as distributed system.

By the separation in Media one reaches gateways and Softswitches that both parts can be developed further independently. Thus one expects for example that the introduction of a new service requires only changes at the Softswitches. On the other hand one needs only appropriate new Media gateway at the net interfaces for the integration of a new network technology.

New services in a NGN are called also NGS (NEXT generation services). These services of the so-called service Delivery Platform (SDP) are furnished.

The slowly progressing spreading of Voice of over IP-Telefonie (conditions 2004/2005) is one of the driving forces behind the emergence of NGNs. Here one stands in the future in telecommunications before the task to have to complete a mass service (Telefonie) over completely different net technology than so far usually. The specific NGN architecture is the answer of telecommunications to this challenge. Another driving Kraft are the costs. One expects to be able to fall back with NGNs altogether very strongly to IP technology already installed which is possibly more economical than the modernization and advancement of the classical switching systems.
