Palm OS is the operating system for the Organizer of the Palm series (sees PDA) as well as for Smartphones.

The devices were manufactured first only by the company Palm, who developed also the operating system. Later the two areas were divided however on the subsidiaries PalmSource (software) and PalmOne (hardware). In the year 2005 the company PalmOne bought the rights at the old name back and designated themselves again in Palm over. Also Sony, Handspring, Garmin, Symbol and other manufacturers licensed Palm OS and used it in their devices. Meanwhile Sony said good-bye however to the PDA market and handjumps by Palm was taken over, so that there are actually hardly still devices with Palm OS of other manufacturers than Palm.

In the year 2005 Palm OS developer became PalmSource of the Japanese company Access CO. Ltd. bought.

Versions

Palm OS 1.0

Since 1996 in the models Palm 1000 and Palm 5000 are used. It contains an address, a calendar, a giving up and an application of memos, in addition a computer and a safety's application.

Palm OS 2.0

Starting from 1997 for the models PalmPilot personnel, PalmPilot pro and IBM the WorkPad is used. New features are the background lighting, a financial programme and a Mailanwendung. A TCP/IP stack and IEEE floating point numbers are implemented.

Palm OS 3.0

1998 was equipped the models Palm III and IBM WorkPad II with infrared interface.

Palm OS 3.1

1999 was equipped the devices Palm IIIx, Palm IIIe and Palm V with improved display and faster CCU. Akkus are supported for the first time and with the Visor of the company Handspring also a plug-in card connection.

Palm OS 3.2

The Palm VII has a radio modem. This functions however only after US standard.

Palm OS 3.3

The model TRG pro of Handera possesses a Compact Flash interface. Furthermore there are a free update for Palm III, Palm IIIx and Palm Vth changes to the version 3.1 was mainly a support of the euro-symbol, faster HotSync operations and extended infrared support.

Palm OS 5.0

Palm OS 6 (cobalt)

PalmSource communicated first details in February 2004 to the conference of US developer to the new Palm OS 6. All Palm-OS-6-Versionen firmieren under the name cobalt. Operation

For the input of data with the Palm OS a kind handwriting recognition is called, used on letter basis, Graffiti. In the lower part of the display two imprinted rectangular surfaces are used: left for letters and right for numbers, partly still divides into large and lower case. New Palm models can this range fade out (Virtual Graffiti) and thus the display surface increase.

In addition, the data are entered with a pin as individual indications, it give software-supported handwriting recognition for whole words. Optionally still another display screen keyboard is available. For longer inputs also external keyboards are available (from Handytastatur to PC size), which can be attached over cables, infrared or Bluetooth. The Treo row has a complete QWERTY keyboard on the equipment, which can be served with the thumb.

Down at the housing are still four additional keys. Thus according to standard applications calendars, directory, tasks and memos are started. Between them still another kind rocker switch is appropriate, with which within applications can be leafed. With the newer devices of Palm there is a 5-Wege-Navigationstaste, with which one can access much information without pin.
