The PC-FX is a play console of the Japanese manufacturer NEC. Contrary to its predecessor PC engine uses the 32-Bit-Konsole according to standard CD-ROM as data medium. Contrary to other play consoles the PC-FX resembles a PC, which is upright set up. The Gamepad resembles that of the Sega mega drive, has however more keys. Furthermore the system has three connections for hardware extensions, which increased the manufacture price, was however hardly used.

History

The PC-FX was sketched with NECs 32-Bit-Entwicklungs-Kit "“Iron one"”. Iron one had been developed 1992, when the PC engine console had enjoyed of still larger popularity. When one presented the technology in the middle of for the first time 1992, NEC announced an imminent publication of a new console on basis of Iron one, which should be supported by numerous third developers. Many PC engine developers faced however sceptically, since the PC engine market was further in growth. Consequently NEC stopped the work on Iron one and concentrated on extensions for the PC engine. 1993 appeared the 32-Bit-Plattform 3DO. The interest of developer was large, so that Sega and Sony announced the 32-Bit consoles Sega Saturn and PlayStation for 1994. Also Bandai worked on a 32-Bit-System named Playdia. At this time the NEC recognized corporation that also she had to bring 1994 a 32-Bit-Plattform on the Japanese market. While Sony, Sega and Bandai their systems on the basis of modern technology had developed and with good had equipped, NEC saw itself now forced to use the Iron become outdated in the meantime one technology in the new PC-FX-console in order to lose no time and the developer basis important for success the PC engine. Thus the PC-FX was the competition performance-related hopelessly which was subject and a system doomed to failure.

In view of the weak sales figures of the PC-FX NEC became clear concerning permitted play contents liberals as the competition, in order to use any developer support.
