A segment in a computer network marks the common physical medium, at which computers are attached.

A segment can interconnect several computers (point multi-point), as it is used with physical bus topologies e.g. with Ethernet over coaxial cables.

A segment can connect also only exactly two participants (point of point). This form is used with wirings over Twisted Pair cables or optical waveguide cables. A segment with point of point a connection is called frequently also link segment.

Segments interconnected by ouple elements such as Repeater, Bridge, stroke, SWITCH or rout.
