The super Nintendo Entertainment system (jap. ) is a 16-Bit-Spielkonsole von Nintendo. The console appeared 1990 in Japan, 1991 in the USA and 1992 in Europe and with "“super Nintendo"” or "“SNES"” was often shortened.

History

The successor of the NES appeared in November 1990 in Japan under the name super Famicom (super Family computer). As super NES it appeared then September 1991 with changed appearance in the USA, 1992 with appearance of the Japanese version in Europe (in Germany in August 1992). The introductary price amounted to in Germany 299 DM, including the play super Mario World). Later still innumerable other SNES Compilations (dt. compositions) followed in those usually more current plays and/or 2 CONTROLLERs was.

As the largest point of criticism with the of the SNES relatively weak 65816 the main processor with 3.58Mhz was called (the Sega mega drive e.g. had the clearly higher performance Motorola 68000 processor with 7.88Mhz), which one can see also at the all first Actionspielen (super R-type, Gradius III), which brought the console very fast to the Ruckeln. The developers began however very fast to use the potential of the SNES correctly and so the later plays ran fast and ruckelfrei despite the slower main processor. Later into some Spielemoduleen auxiliary processors were built like the DSP or the SuperFX chip, in order to accelerate the representation from more primitive 3D diagrams to (the SNES was predominantly a 2D console).

Exactly as with the NES the SNES possessed and its plays a land code chip, which prevented that one could play imported plays on its console. Remedy one could create only by the change of the console or by a special adapter, that the safety chip 2. Play ground through, in order to bridge the landcode-strange safety chip. However not all plays with this adapter, later plays ran even no longer, since these queried additionally still the TV standard of the console (NTSC or PAL).

The SNES was very successfully (approx. 50 million sold units world-wide) and until 1998 was produced. The consoles built last had a new smaller housing and were no longer RGB able (super Famicom junior), which could be repaired however by a change. At the end of of 1996 appeared the official successor of the SNES under the name "“Nintendo 64"”.

The SNES can nowadays with an enormous selection of video games in most different play category impress, and should therefore in no serious console collection be missing.

The start time

The SNES was of Nintendo necessary counterstroke against Sega"´s mega drive. The predecessor NES was world-wide very successful and could itself against the competitive consoles of Sega, which masters system, and Atari to intersperse. In the following years Sega published the 16 bit console Sega mega drive, which was renamed in the USA for license-legal reasons in "“genesis"”. Due to the strong drift of the players from the NES to the mega drive in the USA, and which erstarkenden competition in Japan in the form of NEC"´s PC engines had Nintendo a new console to publish, in order not to lose the connection.

On that hard console market appeared the SNES with a weaker CCU than the competition contested, had however clearly superior diagram and sound abilities. Despite technical deficits at the beginning it succeeded Nintendo with the SNES for the second time to decide the console war for itself. This is to be attributed on the one hand to the fact that Nintendo enjoyed very good reputation by its first console NES still another and on the other hand could itself arrange the programmers very fast with the hardware, so that the Ruckelorgien of the all first plays came fast into oblivion, and which players the decisively superior advantages of the console in diagram and sound could see.

In America nearly each tenth family a SNES possessed and in Japan even was it 40% of the households.

SNES, the stepfather of the PlayStation

A renewed defeat for Segas console already appeared few years after publication of the ore rivals mega drive and super Nintendo. Sega with additional extensions tried this trend as to be stopped the mega CD or the 32x. The mega CD was a CD-ROM extension for the mega drive, which floppte because of their high price and lack of high-quality software grandios. Nintendo"´s answer to the mega CD should become those super CD extension, which one together with Sony, which developers of the SNES sound CCU wanted to develop and drive out. Since however Sony insisted on it, exclusive manufacture and rights to distribute for a possible combination of SNES and super CD console too received, let burst Nintendo the Deal, and turned instead at Philips. Annoyed about Nintendo"´s behavior one decided the technical know-how that with Sony, super CD extension for the development of its own play console, the PlayStation, to use.

The end of one era

At the end of of 1994 appeared the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn in Japan, which were technically in each regard far superior to the SNES. Beyond that the new consoles used now according to standard CD-ROM"´s as data media, which were not only more inexpensive than modules, but also the 150-1200fache at storage capacity offered. In technical periodicals thereupon talked about the end of the SNES era, since the architecture of the new consoles made the liquid representation possible of detailed 3D diagrams, something that one had seen up to then only on very expensive diagram workstations. The term NEXT gene console was coined/shaped in this time, and is today still continued to use until.

There the development of the internal Ultra 64 console (renamed in Nintendo 64 later) strongly retarded, set one with Nintendo further on the SNES, and tried with graphic and spielerisch high-quality Titlen such as Donkey Kong Country or Yoshi"´s Iceland dying to retard. 1998 official play publications still appeared up to the year (2 years after introduction Nintendo 64 console). Among the last plays for the SNES Terranigma and the simulation Harvest Moon rank the game of roles.

For the super Nintendo were published published nearly 4000 official publications about which however only scarcely on the international market.

Emulation

First emulation attempts started around 1996 with the projects "“VSMC"” and "“super Pasofami"”. Both projects were stopped however 1998. Likewise in the year 1996 began also development at the emulator SNES96, which was renamed later in SNES9X.

1998 began SNES enthusiasts with the programming of a free emulator named ZSNES, which is meanwhile together with SNES9X the most popular SNES emulator. ZSNES is open SOURCE under GPL. With both emulators it is possible, SNES plays, which support 2-Spieler-Modi over Internet to play with one another without thereby to external services to fall back (direct UDP or TCP/IP connection). Meanwhile there are even privately operated on-line services as "“zBattle.net"” or "“club z"” with those it possible is to find other SNES players by servers and particularly programmed software in real time and to start a play with these.

By emulators many SNES plays experienced a large upswing. The SNES console could count so also after the Produktionseinstellung on a large fan municipality. Many discovered the console only by the emulation. Meanwhile there are SNES emulators for the most different systems, for example for the Xbox (XboyAdvance) or for the Game Boy Advance (SNES Advance). Besides there is meanwhile also some postage run gene of the above mentioned popular emulators e.g. SNES9xTYL for the PlayStation portable one or OpenSnes9x for the GP32.

It is to be also owed to the emulation and fan municipality that planned, however never published plays were rediscovered. The most famous example is StarFox 2 of Nintendo, which 1995 should have appeared, but due to Nintendo 64 were probably not published. The 2004 prototype of the play discovered is finished to 99%, and can completely be played to the end.
