ThinkPad is the label name of a portable computer (Notebook) and originally comes from IBM. In the spring 2005 IBM sold the PC section to the Chinese computer company Lenovo and thus among other things also to the name "“ThinkPad"”. The name is to attribute to a leather note booklet, which got each IBM coworker during the attitude handed out. It had the print "“Think"” and note books is called English on "“note PAD"”. One has these two words pulled together to "“ThinkPad"”. The Design of the first ThinkPads was compiled at the IBM Design center in Yamato in Japan. The clear, black lines of the ThinkPads were inspired Japanese meal box black-painted by the Shokado bento a traditional. This Design of the ThinkPads hardly changed and could in the years since their appearance 1992 thus a brand name of a conservative and on stability of value respecting firm philosophy become. Particularly in enterprises ThinkPads are far common therefore since IBM can guarantee continuous service and support for its products also over years. Thus for instance the guaranteed spare parts supply for all ThinkPad models amounts to at least five years. Since ThinkPads look "“alike"” at first sight and it gives it for a long time, it knows nearly everyone. The resistant represent a special characteristic of the Design, made of high-grade steel or - with the more expensive classes - from a titanium magnesium composite material worked, which contributes to the generally high robustness. With the model 701 from the year 1996 a Thinkpad was taken up as exhibit to New Yorker museums of the modern arts (museum OF decaying kind, MoMA). The first Thinkpads, which was introduced on the computer stock exchange Comdex in the year 1992, had the 3xx, the 5xx and the 7xxer row following the model designation of BMW, in which the 3er the entrance class, which 5er the middle class and the 7er the luxury class represented. Meanwhile letters took over the Modellbezeichung, see below.

Keyboard

The keyboard of the ThinkPads is unusually well suitable for the letter for Particularly and with many writers likes is the keyboard for its pleasant notice admits - unfortunately however the keyboard of the R-series in evenly this quality sank clearly.

An indication of thought ergonomics out e.g. is like also with large external keyboards into blocks of four partitioned function keys F1-F12. The arrangement of the Hotkey combination is just as durchdacht for switching on of the ThinkLights on: The combination of keys for it is in such a way arranged that it is to be found also in the dark, the two keys for this is in the left lower and right upper corner. A high efficiency when tapping is reached by the TRACK POINT in such a way specified: The TRACK POINT is a small pin, which is let in into the keyboard in the center of the keyboard - between the keys b, g and h - and the mouse replaced. Like that it is possible to move in the ten-finger attitude with the index finger the mouse and to serve with the thumbs the mouse buttons. With otherwise usual Touchpads in addition the hand must be taken by the keyboard. This TRACK POINT stands out as red point on the black keyboard and the black housing and became a distinguishing feature for ThinkPads. There are ThinkPads both exclusively with TRACK POINT and additionally with Touchpad, however none without TRACK POINT. A further characteristic of the keyboard is with newer models the blue "“ACCESS IBM"” - key, whatever permits except auxiliary functions a connection over Internet to IBM, in order to get itself there updates for the ThinkPad or further assistance. In addition this key permits resetting the Notebooks into an earlier condition in the Worst Case scenario. This function is not to confound with the Windows own point of re-establishment, since it is independent of the operating system and still functions also with its loss. The keyboard is sealed splash-proof and lies in a waterproof bowl and newer devices possesses even flumes. So so some accident with liquids without damages can go well, however is this no charter, because it is only the keyboard waterproof, not the whole equipment around the keyboard. A further characteristic of the keyboard of many Thinkpads is the conscious renouncement of the Windows keys. Thus is place for old, AltGr and Strg keys, which are sufficiently large, in order are ergonomically served when typing to be able. The keyboard blocks are additionally coloured separate according to function keys, enter keys, keys for paging back and forth and remaining keys.

UltraBay

ThinkPads possess an additional change pit, which is called Ultrabay. This is versatile applicable, and can be used for example for the following components:

  • LS drive assembly
  • Second Akku
  • Floppy disk drive
  • Number block
  • Zip drive assembly
  • Cradle for a PDA
  • Optical drive assemblies (CD, DVD, burner)
  • Or a second non removable disk

The non removable disk in the Ultrabay does not hang on the same IDE CONTROLLER as the firmly inserted plate, thus exists special limitation regarding boat ability to be able capacity, etc. this concerns a commercial 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte, which is only bolted into a special Ultrabay framework, in order in the Ultrabay Wechselschacht is pushed. The change pit is hot swappable, i.e. the exchange of the components can happen during the current enterprise and become these immediately recognized, the Notebook must for this thus not again be started. If however the active operating system on that non removable disk is installed, which is in the Ultrabay, one should avoid this tunlichst.

The Cradle for the PDA is a file, which a PDA connects with the ThinkPad for synchronization.

With UltraBay one should consider the standards different for different models:
