TSO (time-sharing option) is an interactive command line interpreter for IBM large computer operating systems z/OS. Time sharing permitted that the computer use several users at the same time. They receive the CCU for a certain time assigned, while the other users with their transactions are located in waiting position.
TSO for OS/360 appeared 1971 and on typewriter terminals was originally used. With the break-through of the screen terminals of the type IBM 3270 it became possible to develop Fullscreenanwendungen which displaced the command line nearly completely (ISPF, RPF).
The TSO instructions can be used in a simple Script language CLIST, which is replaced however ever more by the substantially more flexible REXX.
TSO is the main tool for system administrators and program developers on large computers, which run under z/OS.
