Unix system services (USS) is a component z/OS. USS is an adequate, certified Unix implementation (XPG4 UNIX 95). This concerns the first Unix 95, which from at&T/SCO SOURCE code was not derived. By the integration in z/OS additionally TSO COMMANDs and it are available are possible to process Unix files by means of ISPF to the usual Unix services. Extensions in the JCL make it possible to use these files also in batch processings.
Unix system services makes possible it to let Unix applications to IBM run large computers and to implement unixbasierende services on these computers. Programs, which are based in their logic on the numerical values of ASCII characters, form the only incompatibility. Architecture that zSeries is based on EBCDIC.
Programs, which run under USS, have also full entrance to the functions z/OS. This is used if necessary for data base tying up (DB2 over call attach). Such programs are however no longer portierbar then.
The file systems of the USS (HFS) and (zFS) are from view of the remaining z/OS special DATA set.
Forerunner of the Unix system services was an operating system component named open MVS, which in MVS/ESA 4,3 for the first time was implemented and only the POSIX implemented standards.
