Vectrex is a play console, which came in the middle of the 80's on the market. The special was the inserted monitor with vector diagram, rather uncommon for consoles -- thus resulted a typical Linien-Bild, which appeared extremely sharp in the forms rather simply, but but on the monitor. Was manufactured and published the console in the USA von General Consumer Electric (GCE) starting from 1982. To Europe MT transferred the selling. With the bankruptcy of GCE 1984 the Vectrex disappeared also from the dealer shelves.

The provided CONTROLLER could be fastened in particularly a mounting plate intended for it to transport, only 9 tariff a large monitor, a carrying handle to the top side and the play Minestorm (a Asteroids clone), already inserted, made the Vectrex a very mobile console. To be played could thus everywhere, where a plug socket was. Additional play modules could be put in over a module at the right side. At the front was a connection for a second CONTROLLER. The particularly ergonomically not formed CONTROLLER consisted of a similar 4-Wege-Stick and four buttons arranged next to each other. The heart was with 1.6 MHz clocked Motorola 6809-Mikroprozessor (68A09). The sound chip was a AY-3-8912 (similar the AY-3-8910) of general Instrument. An RAM had it 512 KB. The module size amounted to max. 8 KB. A Lightpen was connectable.

Each play had its own plastic foil, which was put over the screen, all the colored diagram "“simulates"”. The number of play developments for the Vectrex is quite visible. However/still further plays are programmed also after the bankruptcy of the manufacturer - usually private developments, which can be referred today partly free of charge over Internet.

Functioning Vectrex consoles are nearly already a rare piece, but by emulator it is to be played possible the plays at the PC or developed new. The appearance of the vector diagram can be shown on the linebased PC monitors however only imperfectly.

The Vectrex be based on the Microvision manufactured by Jay Smith 1979, first are based portable play console. The ROM's (plays) of Vectrex was released of Smith engineering as PD (public domain).
