VTAM (English Virtual Telecommunications ACCESS Method) is a programming interface (API) of the company IBM, which makes functions available to communication with devices for the long-distance data transmission and their users. It was developed in the 70's of the last century.
VTAM made it for programmers possible for the first time to treat and steer without detailed knowledge of the hardware of the individual devices or used minutes the devices as a "logical unit". Before the development from VTAM became BTAM, which uses basic Telecommunications ACCESS Method.
VTAM supports many minutes, about token ring or SDLC and among other things as one of the transmission protocols IBM 3270-Terminals was used. It became late part of the Systems Network Architecture (SNA), which came up again in the systems Application Architecture (SAA).
